Google Analytics Upgrade

v3.x of the Google Analytics SDK and App Studio 4.10.0 will require a Universal Analytics property within your app for the analytics to work.

If you already use a Mobile App property, you don’t need to take any action.

However, if you use a Web Site property, you do need to take action before creating the next build of your App Studio app.

How to identify which type of property you have:

  • Sign in to Google Analytics (you must have Edit permissions on the property)
  • From the Admin page, select the account and property you use for the app
  • Click on ‘Property Settings’
  • If you see a ‘Default URL’ entry, you have a Web Site property and must take action
  • If you don’t see a ‘Default URL’ entry, you have a Mobile App property and don’t need to take any action

Action for Web Site properties:

Step 1. Create an ‘app' view

Once your app is upgraded to use v3.x of the Google Analytics SDK, you will need to run reports in 2 places within Google Analytics.

Data from older versions of your app will be available within the existing ‘web' view

Data from newer versions of your app will be available with a new 'app’ view which you must create as follows:

  1. Sign in to Google Analytics (you must have Edit permissions on the property)
  2. From the Admin page, select the account and property you use for the app
  3. Choose ‘Create new view’ from the drop-down in the View column
  4. Choose 'Mobile App’, provide a name and choose a timezone
  5. Click ‘Create view’

Step 2. Upgrade your property to Universal Analytics

  1. Sign in to Google Analytics (you must have Edit permissions on the property)
  2. From the Admin page, select the account and property you use for the app

If your property needs to be upgraded:

  1. You’ll see a ‘Universal Analytics Upgrade’ option in the Property column – click it
  2. Read the information in the pop-up. If you can confirm that you’re ready to transfer your property to Universal Analytics, click Transfer. If you’re not ready, click Cancel
  3. Allow 24 - 48 hours for the transfer to finish. When a note that says Property transfer complete appears in your account, the transfer to Universal Analytics is done.

Step 3. Upgrade your app

It is not absolutely necessary to rebuild and resubmit your app as Google are promising to support the older version of the SDK for up to 2 years.
When you do decide to create a new version of your app, you must ensure that Step 1 and Step 2 have been completed before releasing the app.
